Study on the properties of a new material (Q)MnCl4

In the paper Tunable Dielectric Switching of (Quinuclidinium)[MnCl4] Hybrid Compounds published on the pages of The Journal of Physical Chemistry C 2021 125 (30), 16810-16818, Natalia A. Wojcik, Dorota A. Kowalska, Monika Trzebiatowska, Ewelina Jach, Adam Ostrowski, Waldemar Bednarski, Marek Gusowski, Piotr Staniorowski, and Agnieszka Cizman present the properties of a new material – hybrid, inorganic-organic crystal (Q)MnCl4 (Q= quinuclidinium).

X-ray studies and those conducted by the Raman and infrared spectroscopy methods showed that this crystal undergoes a reversible, structural phase transition. This transition is an order-disorder transition and is related to the dynamics of the organic cation Q. Measurements of electrical permeability revealed the sample’s ability to switch between two states – high (“ON”) and low (“OFF”) permeability around 258 K (Figure). Possessing this property, (Q)MnCl4 crystals may be an interesting, switchable dielectric material with a wide spectrum of applications.
