We announce with great sorrow the passing of Zbyszek Oziewicz on 8th December 2020. He was our long-time colleague, the Great Patriot and friend.
Zbyszek Oziewicz was a professor of the Wroclaw University and the Autonomous National University of Mexico and worked at our institute from the mid-1960s. In late 1970s he got involved in democratic opposition movement atWrocław, then in 1980 he became an activist of the Solidarity (Independent Self-governing Trade Union “Solidarity”). Since the imposition of the martial law in Poland (1981), he got imprisoned in Grodków. In 1982, together with his friend Kornel Morawiecki and other members of the Executive Committee, Zbyszek founded a movement The Fighting Solidarity which was a unique political opposition organization in Poland and the countries of the Soviet Bloc. Arrested again in 1984, he spent six months in a custody, where he wrote his habilitation thesis.
From 1993 until his retirement from the Wrocław University, in 2006, he was appointed as a full professor of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México UNAM in Mexico City, where he lived and worked until the end of his life. In his didactic work, he implemented innovative and sometimes non-standard programs and methods of their implementation. He was an expressive personality, remembered by his students.
In the initial period of his scientific career, he was involved in theoretical nuclear physics. Later, he shifted the area of his research to mathematical physics. In the 1980s, he was a co-organizer of the annual Wrocław-Leipzig seminars, transformed in the 1990s into the series of Max Born Symposia.
On the 25th anniversary of the founding of The Fighting Solidarity on June 15, 2007, Zbigniew Oziewicz received the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta from the President of the Republic of Poland, Lech Kaczyński, and on June 27, 2016 – the Cross of Freedom and Solidarity by the President of the Republic of Poland Andrzej Duda.
